Campus Ministry

Ms. Eileen Maguire, Moderator

For 90 Years St. Saviour High School has educated the young women of Brooklyn.  As a Catholic institution we seek to go beyond the academics and our educational mission has always been directed to the development of total person.  Campus ministry provides opportunities that support, challenge, and nourish, both the students and the faculty, in their on-going faith formation and spiritual development.

Our faith community, here at St. Saviour High School, participates in regularly scheduled liturgies, penance services and prayer experiences.  Father Murphy, pastor of St. Saviour Parish, is a welcome presence in our school and the presider at school liturgies.  Students, plan, conduct and assist the work of campus ministry as lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion (seniors only), altar services, leaders of prayers, campus ministry representatives and outreach coordinators.

An important component of the spiritual life of the students is our retreat program.  In September freshmen begin their St. Saviour experience with in-house retreat.  During sophomore and junior year students have a one day retreat at nearby spiritual formation centers.  As seniours the girls have the option of a three day/two night retreat in upstate New York or a one day retreat at a local retreat house.

Campus ministry hopes to create an atmosphere where students can come to know their God-given gifts and mature in their spiritual life.  They are challenged not just to learn their faith but to live it.  We expect that each student will then give of their time, treasure and talent in service to others.

During October in observance of Respect Life Month, Jessica Pacitto coordinated a collection of Knapsacks and school supplies for the Park Slope Safe Homes Project, an organization that provides safe places for abused women and children.  Each homeroom was asked to donate $18.00.  This purchased a brand new knapsack filled with school supplies, such as pencils, markers, rulers, pens, loose-leaf, notebooks, crayons, glue sticks, etc.  Since some homerooms collected additional money, campus ministry was able to make a $50.00 donation to Park Slope Safe Homes. Jessica Pacitto, Mary O'Neill, Kerryn Reives and Ms. Maguire delivered the supplies and check on Tuesday, November 13th.

2007 - 08 Activities

At Cultural Harmony Day the Peace Pole was introduced as part of the opening prayer service. Peace poles are used by schools, communities and organizations to serve as a reminder of that people's commitment to peace.  There are over 200,000 peace poles in 180 countries throughout the world.  They are usually between 5 ft. and7 ft., made of wood and uniquely designed with the words: May Peace Prevail on Earth in different languages. After the new year a committee of campus ministry girls will meet to decide on the design, the place and time of its dedication.

During Advent campus ministry is sponsoring gift giving for Providence House and Hour Children.  The freshmen and sophomore Providence House gift giving is being coordinated by Charlotte Cropper. There are several Providence Houses located in the diocese of Brooklyn; they provide shelter for women and children in need.  Providence Houses request clothes and non-violent toys for children - infant through teenage and gifts for their Moms.  Juniors and seniors are collecting gifts and house supplies for Hour Children. The Hour Children residences are places for young children whose mothers are in prison. Their basic need is toys for young children. Megan Deitz, a junior, is spearheading this effort. Both Providence House and Hour Children gladly accept monetary donations and gift cards - Metrocards, toy stores, department stores. etc.

At. St. Saviour we began our preparation for Christmas with a Penance Service on December 3rd. Father Murphy led the prayer service which was followed by an opportunity for individual confessions. During the Penance Service straw was placed in the manger as a sign of preparing a place in our lives for Jesus. Many of our students and faculty availed them of the opportunity to experience God's love through the sacrament of Penance.
On Thursday, December 20th we will celebrate our Christmas Liturgy. Traditionally this liturgy begins with the seniors' procession of light.  Each member of the Class of 2008 will carry a candle to the manger to offer homage to Jesus. Straw for the manger was collected during Penance Service and as part of our gift collection project. The manger will be blessed and placed beneath our Christmas tree during the Christmas season.
We are looking ahead to a Pennies for Patients collection sometime soon. We will place containers in the cafeteria and campus ministry office to collect spare change to be donated for research of blood cancer diseases.
