December 2008: College Scholarship Information

 

Seniors:

All of you should be registered on one of the free scholarship database websites - www.fastweb.com  is probably the most extensive - which will e-mail you, almost weekly for the next four years, with information on scholarships for which you are eligible to apply.

 

However, the following scholarships have been, or will be, posted on the bulletin board outside the Guidance Office. Please check both the board and this website during the next few months, for new postings.

 

Read all eligibility guidelines very carefully before embarking on any application. This list will be updated as necessary.

 

  1. The National Co-Op Scholarship Program: students applying to one of eleven colleges that are members of the National Commission for Cooperative Education – universities include Northeastern, CW Post/LIU, Drexel, Pace, and Johnson and Wales.

  1. Brooklyn College: the college offers an array of scholarships to those who have applied for admission. For more information go to: http://scholarships.brooklyn.cuny.edu

 

  1. C.W. Post Campus of L.I.U.: the annual “Outstanding Scholars Essay Competition” scheduled in February. Students on their mailing list are automatically notified.

 

  1. North Fork Foundation - application available on the website: www.northforkbank.com

 

  1. Los Padres Foundation: offers a few scholarships that primarily target Puerto Rican/Hispanic students in the NYC/NJ Metropolitan area. Very specific eligibility requirements. Apply on-line by January 23 at www.lospadresfoundation.com

 

  1. Carolina Rice Scholarship Program: Essay Contest (may be completed in English or Spanish). Deadline: Mid-Feb. 2009. Applications will be available in the Guidance office.

 

  1. St. John’s University: The Catholic Student Scholarship – specific eligibility requirements and essay required. Applicants must also submit an application for admission to SJU (NY). Deadline: late February 2009. (It may be necessary to establish a prior deadline within the school. Students will be informed as information becomes available from St. John’s University.

 

  1. NY Lottery: Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship – will be awarded to one student in this senior class ($1,250 per year for four years) who plans to attend college in NY. Essay required. Specific eligibility requirements. Applications in Guidance office. Deadline for essay submission: Tuesday Feb. 24 by 2:30 p.m.

 

  1. Ronald McDonald House Charities National Scholarship program – nationally advertised. Very specific eligibility guidelines apply. Deadline: mid-February, 2009. Applications available in Guidance office.

 

  1. Columbus Citizen’s Foundation: for students of Italian Heritage. All information at www.columbuscitizensfd.org.

 

  1. USA Today – Sammy 2009: “Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year”. Deadline March, 2009. Apply at www.bodybymilk.com

 

  1. NYS 2009 Series Scholarships for Academic Excellence: Nominations for these scholarships were submitted in December in accordance with the specific guidelines laid down by the Dept. of Education. The three top-ranking students in the senior class were nominated.

 

  1. NYS Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships: All students who fulfill the specific eligibility requirements – high Regents grades and a minimum total score of 1875 on the SAT will be nominated.

 

  1. KFC Colonel’s Scholarship: Deadline – mid-Feb., 2009. Apply online at: www.kfcscholars.org.

 

  1. AXA Achievement Community Scholarship. Please check eligibility guidelines on the website: www.axa-achievement.com. Apply by February 15, 2009.

 

  1. The Kassenbrock Brothers’ Foundation Scholarship. Students from Bay Ridge who live within the area bounded by 65th Street, and Shore Road, below 14th Avenue are eligible to apply. Applicant must have a demonstrated history of community service and must submit an essay. Further details will be available early in 2009 and will be announced to all the senior classes.
