Sit - Down with Ms. O' Connell
By Justine Henley
1. Ms. O’Connell, you are St. Saviour’s newest teacher. What
attracted you to the teaching profession? And why English?
My father was an Irishman, he was not schooled past the 5th
grade, but he loved words. He was an incredible story teller. I’m
sure I got my love of words from him. He loved to play with words, loved
the richness of them.
2. What is your teaching approach/ style?
|
I try to do what my role model, Ellen
Simpson did. She was my high school teacher. She got everyone
involved somehow. Amazing.
3. Who is your favorite author and why?
I think my favorite author is Iris Murdoch for novels and Lucille
Clifton for poetry. But I also love Nelson de Mille. He is so
entertaining and you also learn a lot from his works. I love a lot of
poets.
|
4. What advice would you giveto someone who
is interested in becoming a teacher?
Do it! It’s not so rewarding financially, but in every other way it
is hugely rewarding.
5. Who was your favorite teacher and why?
Ellen Simpson. I adored her. She was fascinating, powerful, and
knowledgeable. You were never bored in her class. She engaged every
student.
6. What do you perceive as one of the challenges of teaching at St.
Saviour?
The stairs!

| Lights,
Camera, Action!
By Nicole Torchio
Within the past few months, many exciting movies hit the box office.
Three movies in particular caught my eye:
1. ‘Saw IV’--This installment continues the story of the Jigsaw
Killer, and his obsession with teaching people the value of their own
lives. Even though Jigsaw died in the last installment, this film
focuses on his ability to manipulate people into continuing his work. It
is described as being very gory.
|
2. ‘Bee Movie’--This
movie is about a bee that leaves his hive to associate with humans. Some
of the voiceovers for this movie are done by popular actors, such as
Renee Zellweger and Chris Rock.
3. ‘American Gangster’--The storyline for this movie is as
follows: in 1970s America, a detective works to bring down the drug
empire of Frank Lucas, a heroin kingpin from Manhattan, who is smuggling
the drug into the country in the coffins of soldiers returning from the
Vietnam War. |
